Within the 90th IDPG we had about a m1 helmet liner dating, probably more as I've lost track, helmet liners that were in need of serious attention. In both cases the straps are stitched to the loops.

To be totally honest - this was one of my least favorite projects. All postwar chinstraps are made of blackened steel, are marked DOT on the rivets and usually bear a anchor under the flip tab of the buckle.
Like anything, I suppose once you've seen a few you just get a knack for them.
